Native English Speaking Expat Therapists for Thailand

Why It Is Difficult to Find An English Speaking Therapist in Bangkok and Beyond

Finding an English-speaking therapist in Bangkok who is taking new clients is very difficult. It is a challenge that you do not need when you are looking for relief from psychological symptoms.

Chiang Mai University was the first educational institution in the country to offer a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology in 1964. Fifteen years passed before Mahidol University in Bangkok was the first to offer master’s degrees in clinical psychology. Today, there are slightly over 1,000 practicing clinical psychologists in Thailand.

How to find an english speaking therapist in Thailand

The title “clinical psychologist” is a legally protected entity that very few achieve given the education and licensing necessary to use the title. As a result, many people in the mental health field call themselves a psychologist, therapist, coach, or healer.  It can be challenging to figure out who is an accredited practitioner and who is not.

Historically, Thailand dealt with mental health issues with a supernatural or spiritual approach. The acceptance of the supernatural (karma, ghosts and spirits) also explains why Thais—older people in particular—prefer to see monks, fortune tellers, palm readers, face readers, tarot cards or birthday number analysis experts.  However, in recent years there is an increasing number of holistic healing centers accessible to the general public that do not carry the stigma associated with traditional Western psychotherapies.

You May Be Able To Find An English Speaking Therapist In Thailand, But There Are Still Many Reasons to Consider Online Therapy.

As an expat, you may be able to find qualified clinical psychologists and psychiatrists in private hospitals and receive very good care.  However, there are many reasons to consider online therapy. The most notable ones are:

  • Accessibility: Online therapy provides access to mental health support for expats who live outside the metro Bangkok area where resources may not be as abundant. Even if you live in Bangkok, online therapy means no battle with traffic to make the appointment time.
  • Convenience: With online therapy, expats can schedule sessions at times that work best for them. Our therapists are located around the world, so we can find a therapist who’s schedule matches times that are convenient for you.
  • Anonymity and Privacy:  Expats can sometimes feel that their community is so small they do not have any privacy or anonymity. Online therapy means you can be in a space where you feel most comfortable and you don’t have to worry about your therapist being a part of your community. You will not run into them socially.
